MCVI Groundbreaking
More than 100 attend event
October 5, 2001
SAGINAW, MI – Sabrina Keeley, Chief
Operating Officer of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, joined
representatives of the Saginaw community today to break ground for the new
offices of Michigan CardioVascular Institite (MCVI). One of Michigan's
premiere leaders in cardiovascular care, MCVI plans to locate in a $6
million, two-story building on the Saginaw Riverfront. The project is the
first of two medical office facilities planned by SSP Associates, Inc. of
Saginaw.
The site, which previously housed the operations of Genesee Packaging, is
located between Washington Avenue and the banks of the Saginaw River. "The
location is perfectly situated to provide patient services at both Covenant
HealthCare and St. Mary's," said MCVI President Dr. Rao Gudipati. "We are
pleased to be the first medical specialty group practice to anchor the
Washington Avenue Medical Corridor and participate in the revitalization
taking place in the City of Saginaw."
The State of Michigan provided funding support for the project through the
Department of Environmental Quality's Clean Michigan Initiative Waterfront
Redevelopment Program and the MEDC's Core Communities Fund. "We created
these programs so that cities like Saginaw could revitalize their urban
centers,"said Keeley. "Communities throughout Michigan can look to this
particular victory and know that abandoned industrial sites can be returned
to productive use. This is a prime example of what we can accomplish when
the public and private sectors work together."
The City of Saginaw also played a key role in the development by
establishing the Renaissance Zone, closing portions of Water Street,
rewriting parking ordinances and providing funds for demolition. "This is
the type of project we are encouraging in the City of Saginaw,"said Mayor
Gary Loster. "We believe that our future lies in the growth and development
of Saginaw as a regional center for health care."
Michigan CardioVascular Institute was formed in July, 1998 when physicians
and associates from The Heart Group and Valley Heart Institute combined
forces. MCVI expanded again in 1997 when it was joined by Great Lakes
Cardiovascular Institute. MCVI provides services at more than 20 rural
clinics throughout northeast Michigan. The practice is comprised of 21
cardiologists, 6 cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, 9 physician
assistants and a support staff of about 160 employees.
SFI President JoAnn Crary was emcee for the event, which featured comments
from Dr. Sam Shaheen, President of SSP. Also offering remarks were Dr. Rao
Gudipati, President, and Dr. Lou Cannon, Founding President of MCVI. Fred
Frazier, St. Mary's President, and Ed Bruff, Covenant HealthCare Chief
Operating Officer, also spoke about the facilities impact on this region.
