SpringHill Suites
Groundbreaking in Frankenmuth
October 25, 2001
Nearly 100 people celebrated the
groundbreaking ceremony for the 64-room SpringHill Suites by Marriott
project in Frankenmuth on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001. SFI secured a
$290,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Michigan Economic
Development Corporation (MEDC) to upgrade an overtaxed storm sewer system,
paving the way for the project.
"This project is an excellent example of utilization of CDBG funds," said
MEDC President and CEO Doug Rothwell. "It helps create well-paying jobs,
while providing the necessary infrastructure for future economic
development."
Developer Lyle Davis of Frankenmuth also owns and operates the adjacent
Fairfield Inn by Marriott, at the corner of Main and West Tuscola in
downtown Frankenmuth. "Storm sewer
management is an import issue in downtown Frankenmuth," said JoAnn Crary,
President of SFI. "We are pleased that the MEDC will help the City of
Frankenmuth and the Downtown Development Authority remove this significant
barrier to development."
"This is a wonderful example of partnership with MEDC, Saginaw Future Inc.,
the Frankenmuth DDA and the City of Frankenmuth," said Kathleen Mechem, MEDC
Assistant Vice President, who presented the check to Frankenmuth Mayor
Pro-Tem Art Loeffler and DDA Chairman Wayne Bronner on Sept. 20.
SFI Vice President Steven Black wrote the successful CDBG
application. Wolgast Construction will serve as the general contractor on
the the SpringHill Suites project, which is scheduled for completion in the
Summer of 2002.
