31, 2003From brownfield to a
viable business site
Stock Building Supply, which is the country’s largest
supplier of building materials to professional home builders and
contractors, has opened a new facility in the city of Zilwaukee — bringing
26 new jobs and $2.5 million in new investment to the community.
Stock Building Supply set up shop in a new facility
constructed on a brownfield site on Adams Street in the city of Zilwaukee.
The 23-acre parcel includes former Michigan Department of Transportation
highway right of way property as well as Zilwaukee’s former municipal
wastewater treatment plant, which closed in the 1970s and was subsequently
demolished.
Saginaw Future assisted the project’s developer, Gabrielle
Investments LLC, in securing a $250,000 Brownfield Single Business Tax
credit and a $255,000 Community Development Block Grant for sewer and water
extensions to the site.
With these infrastructure improvements, the property is now
a viable site not only for Stock Building Supply, but for future
developments as well. With Saginaw Future’s help, Gabrielle Investments has
gone a long way to revitalize the Adams street area in Zilwaukee, bringing
in new business as well as putting vacant property to productive use and
back on the tax rolls.
