The Mid-Michigan Children's Museum (MMCM)
held a groundbreaking ceremony directly across from its 315 W. Genesee
Ave. location in the City of Saginaw. The ceremony marked the
beginning of its $6 million construction project.
The state-of-the-art museum will provide
children the opportunity to learn in an informal, hands-on, creative and
educational environment.
MMCM will
house 11 galleries that highlight the region's vast and varied
industries and resources.
"The museum's
groundbreaking is the result of the persistent and tireless efforts of
many volunteers. This will be one of Mid-Michigan's most important
destinations," stated Dr. Samuel Shaheen, board member for the
Mid-Michigan Children's Museum.
MMCM credits
generous donations from numerous corporations, foundations and
individuals throughout the Tri-County area. The funds have paved
the way for the project to begin construction. To date MMCM has
raised over $4 million of the $6 million necessary to complete the
project.
"While today is an
exciting day for us all, we still have a great deal of work ahead of us
in raising the additional funds needed," said Sharon Miller, board chair
for the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum. "We are confident all
three communities will continue to support the collaborative effort."
Once the museum
opens in mid-2008, it is expected to attract 100,000 visitors annually,
which will be supported by full and part-time staff. In addition,
there will be many opportunities for supporters to volunteer.
Angela Barris,
president and CEO of the Mid-Michigan Children's Museum, affirmed, "The
youth in our area deserve a place to explore and learn that is both safe
and stimulating. The MMCM will be a wonderful gift for our region
to enjoy." |
