Saginaw County
is located in the central portion of the lower peninsula, in the
heart of manufacturing country adjacent to the industrial and
agricultural centers of the state. Saginaw County also is
home to numerous tourist destinations and near many more.
Saginaw County has long been one of Michigan's most dynamic
industrial/manufacturing centers. Its automotive sector is
headed by Delphi-Saginaw Steering World Headquarters,
TRW Automotive, GM Powertrain Saginaw Metal Casting Operations and
four new suppliers. Saginaw County also is home to a number of
additional suppliers to these large automotive based plants.
Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation, the world's largest
producer of polycrystalline silicon, has invested $1.5 billion over
the past two years in new expansions. The Saginaw County-based
company supplies the raw material that is in one out of every three
electronic device and is also used in solar panel construction.
Saginaw County
is Mid-Michigan's medical center with Covenant HealthCare and
St. Mary's of Michigan servicing 26 counties. Covenant
HealthCare employs over 4,000 workers and has completed its $7
million expansion and diagnostic equipment upgrade at its main
campus. St. Mary's is renowned for
its heart and burn units, along with the Field Neurosciences
Institute that is dedicated to brain research and injury
prevention. Saginaw's Synergy Medical Education Alliance
provides accredited residency training programs, while the
Michigan CardioVascular Institute is the largest group of
cardiovascular surgeons in the state.
Saginaw County
has also established itself as a regional service area for
professional services, such as accounting and legal
specialties. Saginaw County is headquarters for some of the
state's largest accounting firms including, The Rehmann Group and
Yeo & Yeo, P.C., CPA.
The Saginaw
region
(Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties) has a strong position as a
retail and tourist destination. The Saginaw MWA enjoys
a comparative advantage of an approximately 15% higher level of
employment dedicated to retail than the nation and 14% higher
than the State of Michigan. The City of Frankenmuth in
Saginaw County is the State of Michigan's #1 Tourist
Destination.
Agriculture
accounts for approximately 64% of Saginaw County's land use. Other
manufacturing includes bakery and chemical equipment, silicon,
graphite, plastic, and metal products. Pickles, meat products, flour
and beer are also produced in the county.
